The Heavy Metal of Marilyn Minter
If Alyssa Monks [The Girl's All Wet: Alyssa Monks' Great Paintings] is a guilty pleasure, Marilyn Minter is a full on vice squad raid. And I am just talking about her paint quality. Minter paints with enamel on metal, often blending the paint with her fingers. Her subject matter is a sometimes gender bending look at glamor, or a woman choking on her jewels. She often picks up on details that others ignore — the ridge left by a sock on an ankle, the dirt on the edge of a toenail, or clumps of mascara on an eye.
The enormous scale of her paintings invites one to get lost in the detail.
Minter did a series of paintings about pornography. But to me it is the paint itself that is the porn. What a turn on!
