Berthe Weill was the first art dealer of Maillol and Matisse. A recently published biography, currently only in French, appeared in November 2011 in French under the title of “Berthe Weill (1865 – 1951) La petite galeriste des grands artistes” (“Berthe Weill ( 1865 – 1951), The Little Exhibitor of Great Artists”) was the first on the topic. The author is currently looking for a publisher for an English version of this work. “The Unknown Matisse” does discuss the important role that Berthe Weill played in his career. Often artists, especially avant guarde artists, need a dealer to pave the way for them, a go-between between them and their audience.
