SUMMER EXHIBITION LINE UP

I’m heading into a busy stretch, and I’d love to see you at any (or all!) of these shows. Mark your calendars now, whether you catch the full summer spectrum at The Erik Laffer Gallery, a concentrated weekend burst in Greenwich, or a seaside finale in Newport, I look forward to talking color frequencies with you in person.

EXHIBITION INFORMATION

HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: AGNES MARTIN

When I stand in front of an Agnes Martin painting, I feel as if she’s trapped light itself inside the faintest veil of color and then asked it to breathe—slowly, like a meditator counting inhales. Her whisper-soft grids and barely-there stripes aren’t really “about” geometry; they’re vessels for quiet luminosity, tuned so delicately that a single pastel wash can slip from peach to pearl as you shift your weight. The longer you stay, the more the surface seems to pulse, coaxing your heartbeat into the same even rhythm. It’s color reduced to its most spacious octave, light stretched thin until what remains is pure stillness—a painted invitation to meditate with your eyes open.

AT THE MOVIES: JAMES TURRELL

Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring James Turrell, from the "Spirituality" episode in Season 1 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series. "Spirituality" premiered in September 2001 on PBS. From his Quaker Meeting House to his Roden Crater project, James Turrell has devoted his life to capturing the ethereal properties of light and its powers to evoke transcendence and the sublime. James Turrell was born in 1943 in Los Angeles and currently lives in Flagstaff, Arizona.
